Tall Ship Atlantis
The barquentine Atlantis was built as the ‘Bürgermeister Bartels’ at the shipyard Wichhorst as a lightship in Hamburg in 1905. Moored in the Elbe estuary where it was impossible to build a lighthouse, the ship provided a floating beacon to ensure safe passage for shipping.
Barquentine rigging
The hull of the ship was created with the lines and characteristics of a classical sailing ship, one of the reasons for her conversion in 1984 to a cruising ship with barquentine rigging: the foremast is square-rigged, the main and the mizzen mast are gaff rigged with staysails. This thorough restoration project was initiated by Captain H. Paschburg at the Scheel and Joehnk shipyard in Hamburg and in Stettin, Poland. After becoming a stunning Tall Ship, the ship was renamed the ‘Atlantis’.
